The Belgian Financial Services and Market Authority (FSMA) has issued warnings against 38 fraudulent trading platforms.
The regulatory agency stated that in the past few weeks, it has continued to receive complaints from consumers about new fraudulent trading platforms operating in the Belgian market.
These trading platforms attempt to stimulate consumer curiosity by placing fraudulent advertisements on social media or online video platforms. In these false advertisements, a (well-known) person often explains how to quickly get rich. Such trading platforms sometimes use mobile applications to lure victims. These false advertisements or mobile applications typically provide virtual currency, trading software, or training courses. After clicking on an advertisement or downloading a mobile application and providing contact information, the victim usually quickly receives a phone call from the fraudster, offering specific investment advice (stocks, alternative investment products, virtual currencies, etc.).
Other trading platforms use dating apps and fake social media accounts to contact consumers. In addition, many trading platforms use WhatsApp and Telegram.
FSMA pointed out that some fraudulent trading platforms provide consumers with so-called "alliance plans". These programs show signs of pyramid planning.
The behavior of these platforms is very aggressive. They often claim to hold forged authorization from financial institutions, displaying it to appear trustworthy. The fraudsters even attempted to persuade the victims to allow them to remotely control their computers in order to make certain remittances. The fraudsters also try to persuade the victims to invest more and more money. They also promised to repay in exchange for the last remittance. This is a technique of collecting more money from victims.
